History. The Women of Color Quilters Network was founded in 1986 by Carolyn L. Mazloomi. For many years in the early 1980s Mazloomi had tried unsuccessfully to expand her circle of African American. A collection of nearly 3,000 quilts by more than 400 African American artists — believed to be the largest collection of its kind ever assembled — was gifted to the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive BAMPFA as a bequest by Eli Leon, an Oakland-based art scholar and avid collector of African American quilts.

The group effort quickens the project’s pace and creates space for sharing skills and stories, sorrows and celebrations. Passing on traditions constructs a special sense of community along with a quilt. Through the lens of African American quilts, explore layers of creativity, diversity, and family history that enrich the fabric of communities.

Feeling isolated and at times constrained by being the only African American members of an otherwise all white quilt guild, women of color began seeking each other out, forming new groups, and asking questions about African American quiltmaking history and tradition.
